My favorite kind of sweet is one with a little salt- probably because I love salt and if I'm going to be "forced" to eat something sweet, I want it to be a little salty too. I was standing in the check out at Publix and saw a pie on the cover of Woman's Day for a pretzel pecan chocolate pie. It made me think about my grandma's chocolate pecan pie (which, minus the pecan topping, is the chocolate chess pie I make). Truth be told, I don't love pecans. I like them on their own but I don't like the texture of nuts in food so I usually steer clear of the pecan pie at Thanksgiving. I wondered if I could make that pie from Woman's Day without the pecans- I mean...who doesn't love pretzels and chocolate? To make a long, rather pointless story short, I did some googling and found out that "pretzel pie" is actually a thing- maybe not a very well known thing but people have made them before so I decided to give it a go.
It's delicious! The center is gooey just like a pecan pie. It is perfect for someone who has nut allergies or just doesn't like pecans but you could easily put 1/2 cup chopped pecans in with the pretzels if you wanted to. The only mistake I made was that I left the pretzel pieces a little larger than I should have. I should have given them a quick go in the food processor. I plan on making another one for Thanksgiving so this was a good trial run.
And it was breakfast.
