Fall Essentials

Fall Essentials

This is my fall/winter wardrobe.  We don't really have a winter here so I can get away with wearing these things through February.  The great thing about these pieces is that they all go together so if I'm packing to go somewhere, I just throw them all in a bag without much thought.

Vest
I've got two quilted vests that I wear almost everyday.  Lands End makes a great affordable quilted vest in fun colors.  I have an orange one that I wear over long sleeve t-shirts and yoga pants when I'm just out running errands.  I bought the navy quilted J.Crew vest a few weeks ago.  I also spotted a bunch of colors in the Talbots catalog last night.

Long Sleeve Tees
Finding a good long sleeve t-shirt is nearly impossible.  It needs to be long in the torso, have a little bit of stretch so it keeps shape, have long sleeves (not short long sleeves, you know what I mean?), not shrink, and be affordable.  Last year, Target (Mossimo) had a long sleeve shirt that fit the bill perfectly so naturally I bought 15 of them (in black, white, grey & white striped).  They have the same shirt again this year but for some reason it has a seam down the middle of the back.

 J.Crew Minnie Pants
I love wearing Minnie pants with flats.  They're so comfortable especially for riding in the car which is what we seem to do a lot of in the fall.  I get mine from the factory store because they seem to have a little more "curve" to them.  I stick to black.

Ankle Corduroy Pants
Last year I bought a pair from Lands End because you can customize the length.  I thought that was genius and more stores should offer custom lengths!  They weren't advertized as ankle pants but I ordered them that way and ended up wearing the heck out of them!  This year, they have slim ankle cords in some great colors!

Button up shirt
I love a button up shirt under a vest.  Plaid, gingham, I love them all.

Skinny Jeans
I never would have thought I would love a pair of skinny jeans but Banana Republic makes some awesome skinny jeans.  The pair that are linked in that set are really thin so they're perfect for stuffing in boots.  They are super dark so they're more slimming than any pair with whiskering and they've got a little stretch.  They also come in petite so I don't have to get them hemmed.

Jean Straps
Speaking of boots, if you don't own Jean Straps you are missing out! They are elastic straps that attach to your pant legs to keep them pulled down while you're wearing boots.  Because they're elastic, when you bend your knee your pant leg doesn't pull out.   Seriously, if you're duct taping your pants to your sock (I know you do!), do yourself a favor and get some Jean Straps.

Flats & Boots
Duh.  What else are you going to be wearing?

Scarves
Scarves are my accessory of choice.  I wear them to work with black dress pants and a long sleeve tee (and every other day).  J.McLaughlin makes a great scarf.  I spotted a really cute leopard one at Old Navy that I think I'm going to add to my collection. Love sleeve tee

  1. Um that is too brilliant about the Lands End cords. I'm a shorty too, so I am DEFINITELY looking into those for this fall. Thanks for the tip!

  5. I love all of these picks. I get so jealous when all my friends up north get to wear tights and boots weeks and sometimes months before I do. I cannot wait to wear fall clothes again!

  7. I would love a new vest this year. I had mustard cords but now they don't fit and I'm pretty bummed. Thanks for the tip on BR jeans. I keep putting off buying good jeans!

  8. Lands End also has a great selection of long sleeved shirts. I've got a long torso and short legs so I need longer lengths in shirts or I end up looking lopsided. They also have fantastic ponte knit dresses perfect for travel in the fall/winter months for work. Bulky sweaters and jeans take up too much room for work travel so I pack a few of these dresses with a pair of complimentary boots and voila, I can carry on my bag and be fabulous.

  9. Thanks for the tip on the jean straps! I've always had to pull my socks over my jeans to put on my boots.

  10. This will sound so odd, but I'd suggest checking out the long sleeve tees at Motherhood Maternity? They're long in length (to cover the bump as well as the stretch panel waist of the maternity jeans), have a good stretch weave to them, a relatively modest neck line, and are super soft. They also do not have that weird ruching thing around the sides of the belly, so they look like regular tees. I still wear mine all the time, and will continue to purchase them (and their tank tops) in the future!

  11. This is totally what I wear during the fall/winters back in SC too! Throw some TOMS in there and it's definitely my closet. Hopefully I'll be able to work some of these in while I'm living in TX too!

  15. I've been looking for a black "casual" pant for the fall -- do you think the Minnies are okay for weekend wear or better for work?

    1. I actually think they're better for the weekend. I wouldn't wear them to work because I have to be a little more dressed up and these pants are pretty fitted rather than a looser dress pant. The Factory store version, the "Winnie", is great too. I actually prefer the factory ones.

  16. Wonderful picks - would love to hear you compare the J.Crew vest to the Lands End ones!
