Antique Chest Redo

I had been looking to replace a little chest I had next to the stairs because it was a little too small for the wall it was on.  I had my eye on a few and figured I'd eventually pull the trigger and buy one but then I found this little chest on Craig's List for $40.

 I figured if I got it home and didn't like it for the space, well...I wouldn't be out much.  Last weekend we went to Ace and stocked up on paint stripper and paint- I spent most of Sunday sweating my butt off in the backyard scraping paint off of it.  There were no less than 5 layers of paint on this little antique chest.

I chose Benjamin Moore Valley Forge Tan after spending an hour in front of the paint chips at Ace.  It's a gray tan.  I loved the color on the paint chip, I loved the paint chip against the wall, but once I had it all painted, it didn't pop against the wall as much as I thought it would.  I compared the chip to the chest and it was the same color so I'm not sure where it went wrong.  I decided to leave it that color for a few days and it has really grown on me.  I wanted everything to be natural and muted downstairs- almost french country tones- and I think it does that well. Once I got the hardware on it, I really liked it.

I ordered the antique brass circle pulls from Lee Valley.  I think they really make the piece.  While I was stripping it, I found a little brass keyhole in the top drawer...I was able to get the paint off of it and replace it.  It looks perfect with the pulls.

I also really love the sides and the little wheels.  Old furniture is made with so much more detail than the cheap stuff in all of the big box stores.  Yes, the drawers don't fit together perfectly and yes I had to scrap multiple owners dirt and grime off of it but it was well worth the effort.
