Tomato Sandwich

One thing I love about summer is a good tomato sandwich.  Best made with a really beefy tomato, coarse salt, plain white fluffy bread, and mayonnaise.  It's usually hard to find a really good tomato any other season except summer and in the past, I've always used ugly tomatoes.  This weekend we made tomato sandwiches with tomatoes from our own garden!  A first for me.  We've got a few different varieties: Mr. Stripey, Mortgage Lifter, Yellow Taxi, and some others I can't remember.  I think any variety of yellow tomato is my favorite.  They make the best caprese salad!

I used a Mortgage Lifter to make these. Look at how big the slices are!  As much as I love summer for it's longer days, watermelon, and tomato sandwiches- it was in the upper 90's last week.  I'm not ready for all of that!

  1. I love a good tomato sandwich in the summer!!! You are right, they do not compare any other time of the year. Our tomatoes still have a ways to go, but I am excited to have some fresh tomatoes soon enough.

  2. I love Mr. Stripey! It's my favorite but there is no where to buy them in DC, even at farmer's markets.

  6. I love tomato sandwiches. I still remember when my Dad would cut up tomatoes from the garden and make sandwiches. Maybe I just loved the mayo that also went with them, but they were amazing!

  9. Gotta love a tomato sandwich. I fix mine the same way you do, but I add a little pepper to it. Another option for us are wonderful BLT sandwiches. Yummy!

  13. Tomato sandwiches are amazing! We bought a lot of heirlooms this year too. Our cherokee purple looks like a tree. Unfortunately it's felt more like March than June this year in the NC mountains, so no tomatoes just yet for us.
