My Favorite Bookcase

This bookcase is still my favorite piece of furniture.  I bought it back in February at Scott's Antique Market in Atlanta.  I have changed very little with the shelf styling since I first put it together.  In fact, I think the only thing I did was swap out that lettered cone shell for an antique camera and add a few more old books (a few hand dated in 1904!).

I'm faced with a situation.  In 4 weeks, I am moving.  Into a beautiful house in a historic district here in town.  That's right.  I am finally trading in the "luxury apartment living" (HAH!) for a house with a beautiful front porch, transoms, coffered ceilings, wood floors, and bungalow-style built ins.

The only problem is, the entire interior is painted a greyish blue color. While it's a beautiful color that fits in with the historic neighborhood...my go-to color for the past 2 years has been teal.  And the two just do not go.  I can deal with replacing shower curtains, lamps, bed linens, and throw pillows but I do not want to paint this bookcase.  The teal color is what caught my eye and made me buy it.  I probably wouldn't have noticed it if it had been any other color.

This bookcase is so me.  The things that fill it are some of my absolute favorite things and inspire me.  I'm not in love with the bottom two shelves...I need to work on those.

I'm trying to get away from the "shabby seaside" (note: NOT tacky beach condo) decor that I've been drawn to the past few years.  I've got big ideas for my new house! The redecorating process has absolutely consumed me the past few weeks.  I think I've finally got an inspiration board that I'm pleased with.  Stay tuned for that!

  12. I agree, love the bookcase AND the color, don't change it! I'd say, figure out where you want it to go in the house and then either paint that one wall as an "accent wall" but use white, or find some color that could tie the teal in with the blue-gray walls, so that the bookcase is not actually up against the blue gray. Or find a subtle fabric that ties the two together, and use liquid starch to cover the wall behind the bookcase. Have fun decorating the new house -- can't wait to see pictures!

  14. Congratulations on the new house!! How exciting!! As for the bookcase, maybe repaint your bedroom to coordinate with the bookcase? You could swap out some of the accessories with antique vanitey sets, a small bust for necklaces, a pedastal mirror. Or even a bathroom, if you have space. You might need to put a clear coat on it to pretect from moisture but it would be beatuiful with folded towls, candles, silver cups of cotton balls, q-tips, etc.

  15. Maybe you'd love it just as much painted a different color after you got used to it? {Though I know how much you love that color because I love it, too!} Or, could you leave the back of the shelves this color and paint the rest something else? Certain neutral colors could probably make the current color work better with the grey you have.

  19. This bookcase is beautiful and I love the color! Have to go back and look if you wrote what the exact color is because I want to do that color on something! Also the arrangements in your bookcase are perfect. They look so nice and interesting yet not cluttered.
