The Jack Daniel's Distillery is in Lynchburg, Tennessee. We hadn't planned on stopping there on our way to Nashville but that's the beauty of traveling without an itinerary. I have to admit that I wasn't entirely on board when Todd mentioned he would like to take a tour of the distillery. Whiskey isn't really my cup of tea but once we got there, I really enjoyed it. The drive to the distillery is beautiful. The rolling hills, red barns, white fences...I could get used to that!
The large grey building up on the hill in this picture is where they keep the barrels of whiskey. If I remember correctly there are about 70 barrel houses on the property and they are huge! We saw them on the horizon before we even got into Lynchburg. They don't allow pictures inside any of the buildings.
Back when Jack Daniel's was started (in the mid 1800's) , this is where all of the business was conducted. If everything looks like it's got a dusting of black powder in these pictures that's because it does! Apparently it is common for the trees and buildings around breweries to grow a black mold because of the yeast that is used. It's harmless and actually makes everything look really "rich".
The tour lasted about an hour and at the end...well, Lynchburg is in a dry county...so we got a nice glass of lemonade. ;-)

ReplyDeleteHow cool! I'm not much of a whiskey person either, but an experience like that would make it worth a few sips!
