This weekend we visited Amelia Island for a famous antique car show. Cars are not really my forte but there were promises of "Great Gatsby cars" so I was in the car and ready to go at a very painful hour this morning. We stayed up entirely too late watching movies last night (Catfish and Inception) and losing an hour with the time change did not help one bit! (sidenote: we stopped for coffee at McDonald's and I got Oatmeal- have you had it? I loved it! But apparently it's got more sugar than a Snickers bar...and I added a packet of Splenda.)
A few of the cars had women (and some men!) dressed in decade appropriate outfits which was by far my favorite part of the whole event. It's so much fun imagining what life was like back when these cars (and clothing) were the norm.
It's nearly impossible for someone who doesn't really know how to use a camera to take pictures in blinding afternoon sunlight. All of my pictures are washed out. Big bummer!
There were plenty of Gatsby-ish cars. I love everything The Great Gatsby (wish they would get on with the production of the new movie already!).
There were plenty of new cars, too. Todd loved the Cadillac CTS-V. Boys will be boys!
The weather couldn't have been more perfect and I was glad to tag along with Todd to do something he wanted to do. Every time I thought about whine- I remembered how much fun it was for him to be drug through the Southern Living Idea House while I ooed and aaahed over magnolia garland and burlap bows. Loads, I'm sure of it! I think we're planning on going back next year- had I known all of the women would be wearing big sun hats I would have worn one too! Next year I'll be prepared! Really though...I'm trying to figure out how I can be one of the period girls and ride around in an old car pretending I'm Daisy Buchanan.

Amelia Island is so beautiful! I'm from Florida and used to love going there for weekends away in college. I have friends that loved the place so much that they named their cockapoo puppy Amelia! (She was sand colored as well.)
ReplyDeleteI love the Gatsby cars! My fiance has inherited an classic ford truck so I know car shows may be something in my future! Also, I am truly disappointed in McDonald's oatmeal when I found out the nutritional facts! I guess I will stick to more expensive starbucks!
ReplyDeleteAugh, I heard that about the McD's oatmeal, too! So deceptive! Too bad, since it really is tasty.
ReplyDeleteLooks pretty fabulous! My hubby is a car guy and would be drooling over these cars, fun!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I loved seeing all the photos of the antique cars.
ReplyDeleteomg so cool! I love anything Gatsby-related too :)
ReplyDeleteSo classy! Amelia Island is a blast. I haven't been to the car show but it looks fab.

Love, love, love The Great Gatsby! What a GREAT weekend!!
ReplyDeleteJust a quick note about the sun washing your photos out. There is a way to adjust that in the manual setting, I think. (I consider myself a novice at best, so I may not explain this right!). In the manual setting, once you set your apeture and speed, and you press your button 1/2 way down, without actually taking a picture, you see the little grid with the numbers 0, +1, +2, and -1, -2. I don't know which way to move it, but if you move it to +1 or -1, this is called pulling or pushing. This may help with the overexposure. When I have done this, my colors become much more vivid in the sun. Now, if you go in the opposite direction, you get even more washed out. The best thing to do is read about pushing/pulling, or what I did was go outside and play with the settings to see which comes out best in sunlight. Hope this helps! :) Amy (thewitfamily on twitter)
ReplyDeleteDid you see the blog: Entertaining House? She has a posting regarding the home which was based on The Great Gatsby. It's slated for demolition. It's interesting!
ReplyDeleteI love The Great Gatsby too! I'd love it if they made another movie!!!
ReplyDeleteIs that McDonalds oatmeal full of sugar? I had it and it was so darn good!!! i don't want to know if it's terrible for me, it'll ruin it!
With your love of Gatsby have you read The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian? It's one of my favorites of all time and it has a Gatsby connection!
