Whole Foods

I'm the kind of person who gets very attached to MY grocery store and even if I'm in the parking lot of another Publix, I'll go all the way to MY Publix, though it may be out of the way, because..well, it's MY Publix. The funny thing is, this doesn't apply to other types of stores- I'll go to a Super Target or a Super Wal-Mart (although I won't buy meat at either).

Today I decided to go to Whole Foods for the first time. Gotta tell ya...not a fan. I bought a $9 cherry. One cherry (or so it seemed). I decided against the $7 organic, recycled, blessed by the hippie god paper towels. The fruit juice bar, BBQ bar, cheeses, bakery, espresso...I loved all of that but I would never do my everyday grocery shopping there. I'd end up with $75 worth of olive oil and trail mix!

In my opinion, The Fresh Market is better than hippe-healing-crystals-Whole-Foods. I love being greeted by that wall of chocolate banana chips, mustard pretzels, and carolina mix. Whole Foods has a wall of flax seed and probiotics. And Whole Foods rotisserie chicken doesn't even come close to The Fresh Market's rosemary rotisserie chicken.

  1. I love Fresh Market! The butchers are very helpful. Plus I love the European Style market.

  2. I have to find a Fresh Market near us. I've heard such great things! As for Whole Foods.. I love it for the meat, fish, local fruits and veggies and sushi :o) I do agree, there is a definite "hippie" section there. We stay out of that aisle ;o)

  3. Thank goodness the hippie crystals haven't gotten to everyone other than me! I went into WF for a few things and all I left with was a bottle of red wine and a panic attack!

  4. ha ha! I feel the same way about my grocery store. The one thing I dread most about moving to a new home is getting a new grocery store! I know where EVERYTHING is in my Kroger! Whole Foods has a few good things like brown rice sushi but I do prefer Fresh Market over WF. And now the FM sushi chefs started making brown rice sushi so I am in heaven! Our WF is always insanely packed too and the irony is that I see more overweight people at WF than anywhere! Geez, organic ain't gonna help you drop 75 pounds people. ha ha, now I am being mean & will probably get hate mail on your comments!

  5. I've never been to either of those stores but it makes me think of this one store I went to in Bolinas, California. If you want to see hippiness (so not a word) at its finest go there, you'll totally get a laugh out of the place. The town is so out there that they take down the sign that leads people there so that it can't be found because they don't want to be "commercialized".

  6. I love going to Whole Foods. Yes it is not a place to do my everyday shopping. There 365 store brand is great. I love the Roasted Chiptole salsa

  7. I agree with you about Whole Foods prices... but you'll love their politics. The president of Whole Foods had a great article in the Wall Street Journal arguing against nationalized healthcare (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204251404574342170072865070.html). It actually made me want to shop there.

Oh, and their salad bar is amazing.

  8. I am SO in love with my Fresh Market! And you're right, their rotisserie chicken is the BEST. We eat it for dinner about once every 2 weeks.

  9. I am the same way with my Publix. I will go way out of the way to get there and know exactly where everything is!!

  12. The biggest thing I miss about Florida other than family and friends is Publix. Please keep shopping their at least for me in spirit!

  13. That's why that place is called Whole Paycheck. It's insane!

  14. I go to the hippie food stores for specialty items but I'm with you - majority of my grocery shopping can be done for significantly less money at a regular grocery store. Even Super Wal-Mart is stepping up their bakery and deli area. Gotta love saving money these days!

  15. haha--I love this post! I feel the same way about Publix (((LOVE)))!

  16. You've got to try Trader Joes if you have one near you! It's like the Ikea of Whole Foods...way cooler stuff and it is insultingly cheap! Their two buck ($2) chuck wine is awesome too!

  17. ugh, nothing is worse than going to a unfamiliar grocery store and having to wander around FOREVER looking for something dumb like mustard!

  18. I completely agree! Do you have a Trader Joes in your area. It would be worth checking out. Love me some Trader Joes. They have the BEST fresh salsa you have ever had. It's a must try. Plus their reusable shopping bags are so cute!

  19. I went to Kroger this weekend, just to run in and get something, something they did not have, and was reminded why I ALWAYS go to the Publix here. I can't get my basic groceries anywhere else.

I used to drive 30 minutes out of my way to go to the Fresh Market in Columbia. There is something about that dessert case that just calls my name.

  20. I am so with you! I am originally from NC where there was a wonderful Fresh Market across the street from my school and here in DC there's nada. There's one tiny Safeway that never has a thing and a Whole Foods...and the prices are even higher at that Whole Foods then others. It's terrible!! Especially when I know the wonders of Fresh Market!

  21. I totally agree. And Fresh Market's low fat pimento cheese, to die for.

Let us know how you like the black dress. I was looking at the same one for a wedding this summer.

  22. I so wish we had a Fresh Market by me. I love their chocolate chip cookies from the bakery. I

  23. I think Fresh Market and Whole Foods are both amazing. It just depends on what I'm shopping for and what kind of mood I'm in. Either way, I know that I'm going to spend way too much money. I still do my main shopping at Publix but prefer to get produce and meats at either FM or WF b/c it's so much better!

  24. mmm i LOVE whole foods!! ..but, i do live in california, with my fellow fruits and nuts ;) ...and i'm a vegetarian...and i love crazy diets...hahaha oh man, at least i promise i'm a clean, lilly wearing, preppy person with hippie food tastes!

  25. I'm all for eating healthy (sometimes) but daaang I can't deal with whole foods. I buy some of their vitamins and stuff like that and everytime I'm in there I think they are going to call PETA on me for my leather bag & shoes. Okay maybe thats too much but I do feel out of place.

  26. Everyone says Fresh Market is better than Whole Foods. Alas, here in the desert we don't have that option. I'd never do ALL my shopping there (they didn't earn the nickname "Whole Paycheck" for nothing!) but I'm so glad to have them around.

  27. I'm the same way about "my" Publix! Won't go to any other one, since they know me there and are always super nice. Have been to FM a handful of times, but find it to be WAY to crowded!!! I hate crowded aisles when shopping...Food there was ok, reminded me of European Department store food fare.

  28. I see a post that you have about a Louis you have for sale, but everytime I click the link it says page not found. Have you sold the bag yet? Can you email me the information???

  30. I live in the same city as GRITS and we do not have a Trader Joe's in our city by the sea! There used to be one in Savannah but that closed a while ago.

    ReplyDelete
  31. HA! I laughed out loud because I agree with you 100% Hippie gods do not need to bless anything of mine.

  32. The seafood counter at Fresh Market is great. I love getting the parmasean tilapia-- a quick meal for entertaining that looks SO homemade. I will agree that Trader Joe's is great, too!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I SO agree with you!!! We had a Fresh Market right near us in the city we used to live in, and here in Charleston there is ONLY a Whole Foods and it is not even close - I miss Fresh Market so much (and yummmm, their desserts were so good, too)!
By the way, just ran across your blog for the first time - it's great! :)
